Nobody has ever bought a POS system from me.
They've bought shorter lines. Fewer mistakes at checkout. A manager who gets to go home on time.
Every day, I talk with restaurant and retail operators, and I hear the same stories about what isn't working: a terminal that freezes when the line is longest, orders or inventory that don't sync, a system so complicated that new staff avoid it and find workarounds.
Early in my career, I walked into those meetings ready to show features. More often than not, I'd get politely stopped partway through with some version of:
"I don't care what it does. I care whether my staff will actually use it on our busiest day, and that it works."
That changed how I talk to customers.
Now every conversation starts with the busiest, most chaotic day of their week. I ask questions like:
- What happens when the line is out the door?
- Where do things fall through the cracks between your team, your systems and your customers?
- What does your newest employee struggle with on their first shift?
- What do you do when something goes down at your peak hour?
Then we work backward from there. The right solution isn't the one with the longest feature list. It's the one that holds up when the pressure is highest and the margin for error is smallest.
Operators don't have time for technology that needs babysitting. They need tools their team can pick up quickly, trust completely and forget about, because the focus should be on the customer, not the screen.
In hospitality and retail, technology is only as good as how it performs under pressure.
